How to Make Butternut Squash Baby Food (Baby recipe)

Make Butternut Squash Baby Food
Butternut squash is a perfect starter food for babies who are being introduced to solids. If you wish to make such a concoction, feel free to follow this simple guide.

EditSteps

  1. 1
Buy butternut from a local grocery store.
  2. 2
    Boil or steam the butternut.
  3. 3
    Allow the butternut to cool.
  4. 4
Remove the skin of the butternut with a sharp knife.
  5. 5
Remove the pips from the butternut.
  6. 6
Blend the butternut squash in a food processor. You can complete this step manually using a potato masher or fork if you do not own a blender or food processor.
  7. 7
Add half a teaspoon of Vegemite to the pureed butternut squash.
  8. 8
Boil glass baby food bottles and lids to sterilize them.
  9. 9
Remove bottles with a pair of tongs from boiling water.
  10. 10
Place butternut into jars and seal.
  11. 11
    Allow jars to cool.
  12. 12
Place bottled butternut squash into the freezer. Remove and thaw as needed.
  13. 13
For younger babies, freeze smaller portions of butternut squash puree in ice trays.
  14. 14
Once your baby is accustomed to the taste and texture of butternut, slowly start adding additional vegetables and even fruit to the butternut squash base.

EditTips

  • Introduce new foods to the squash one at a time.
  • Butternut squash can be mixed gradually with pumpkin, gem squash and pureed green vegetables over time.
  • After a few months, you may want to start introducing baby to white meats such as chicken which blend easily into a vegetable mix.

EditWarnings

  • Avoid warming baby foods in a microwave oven. If you have bottled your food, simply place the bottle in a small amount of water on the stove top. Once the water begins boiling, remove the lid and keep testing the temperature of the food.
  • Avoid vegetables such as cabbage and onions which may cause winds. A good rule of thumb is to avoid all foods which are to be avoided when one is breastfeeding.
