La scena iniziale vede James Bond alla guida della sua Aston Martin scappare dagli inseguitori che gli danno la caccia per liberare Mr. White, imprigionato e legato nel vano posteriore
della macchina. Dopo essersi liberato dagli inseguitori, Bond giunge a Siena, dove incontra M: i due interrogano Mr. White al fine di ottenere maggiori informazioni su Quantum,
un'organizzazione terroristica di cui l’MI6 non sa praticamente niente. Una delle guardie del corpo di M, Mitchell, si rivela però un infiltrato e attacca M, consentendo a Mr. White di
fuggire. Dopo aver ucciso l’infiltrato, Bond torna a Londra e scopre che Mitchell aveva contatti ad Haiti. È qui dunque che si dirige, identificando questo contatto con la persona di
Edumund Slate, un killer ingaggiato per uccidere Camille Montes, amante del facoltoso imprenditore ambientalista Dominic Greene. Bond uccide Slate; ciò gli consente di seguire Camille e di
capire che Greene sta aiutando un generale esiliato dell’esercito boliviano – il Generale Medrano – a prendere il potere con un colpo di stato, in cambio di un apparentemente insignificante
e improduttivo deserto.....................
