How to make low-fat crisps at home

How to make low-fat crisps at home
To maintain a healthy weight, or lose excess weight, you may wish to include low fat snacks, such as low fat crisps, as part of your healthy eating plan. However, commercially-produced low fat crisps may contain large amounts of salt and artificial fat substitutes, such as olestra. Selection of high quality ingredients for homemade crisps enables you to choose heart-healthy unsaturated oils, such as sunflower oil, and follow a diet that is low in salt and without artificial additives.

Easy

Instructions

Things you need

  • Potatoes
  • Knife
  • Paper Towels
  • Bowl
  • Oil
  • Paprika
  • Salt
  • Colander
  • Baking sheet
  1. 1
Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius.
  2. 2
Wash eight small potatoes and cut them into wafer-thin slices. Tip onto a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  3. 3
Mix 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil, half a teaspoon of paprika, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Add the potatoes and toss to thoroughly coat them in the oil and seasonings.
  4. 4
Place potato slices into a colander and shake briskly over a sink to remove excess oil.
  5. 5
Arrange potato slices in one layer onto a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet onto the lowest shelf in the oven for 10 minutes. Turn the potato slices over and roast them for a further 10 to 15 minutes, or until they are crisp and golden brown.
  6. 6
Spread the crisps onto a paper towel to cool.

Tips and warnings

  • To increase your vegetable intake, use root vegetables, such as parsnips, beetroot and sweet potatoes, instead of white potatoes.
  • Closely monitor cooking progress of crisps to prevent burning them.
